Alaska Backpacking Adventure

Experience Alaska's wilderness on this multi-day trek with Denali by your side
Join us on a hiking adventure through Alaska’s wilderness. Traverse a remote alpine ridge with views of the Alaska Range, Talkeetna Mountains, glaciers and alpine lakes. Along the way, watch for Alaska’s wildlife, from moose to bears and smaller creatures that inhabit this untamed landscape. Known to Athabascans as ‘The Ancient One’, this ridge is known for offering some of the best views of Denali in the state. On clear days, North America’s tallest peak towers nearly 17,000 ft above the trail, a constant reminder of the scale and beauty of this wilderness. Every step brings new perspectives, whether it’s a sweeping valley below, a glacier river above or the quiet of high alpine life. This trek is designed for adventurers on the hunt for connection, challenge and the deep, restorative immersion that Alaska’s backcountry provides.

After breakfast at the hotel, your adventure begins as you start getting closer to Denali views toward the Alaska Range. At a quiet trailhead beside a mountain creek, you’ll start a steep ascent onto a remote ridge. Climbing above the trees into the alpine tundra, the landscape opens into 360-degree wilderness views, with Denali – North America’s tallest peak – commanding the skyline. These views stay with you all the way to camp, where your tent overlooks the massive Eldridge Glacier. After settling in, gather with your group for a camp dinner prepared by your leader. After loading up your packs and gear, you’ll head deeper into the backcountry toward a quiet trailhead that opens onto one of Alaska’s most dramatic ridgelines. From here, you’ll continue south, climbing to points where two massive mountain ranges frame your day – the rugged Talkeetna Range to the east and the mighty Alaska Range, with Denali, rising to the west. As you move along the ridge with your best trail shoes gripping the tundra and the crisp air filling your lungs, you may catch yourself grinning, wondering how a place this wild and expansive can be real. Tonight’s camp sits among geological formations, a spot where ancient rock meets endless sky. Set up your tent, settle into the quiet and soak in another evening of wide-open wilderness and shared adventure.

As you approach a serene mountain lake, the trail climbs again, lifting you back above the tree line and into wide-open alpine country, where the terrain feels endless. This is where the mountains remind you why you came – for the space to explore, the challenge of a high route and the true freedom that only the alpine region gives. Another night at camp awaits as you continue your journey through the Alaskan wilderness.

As evening settles over the ridges, you’ll roll into your last backcountry camp – one more chance to sleep under the stars and share stories with your trail community. Celebrate your final night in the Alaskan tundra with a leader-prepared dinner and the kind of camaraderie that only forms after days spent moving through wild country together.

From here, you’ll begin the drive back to Anchorage, trading tundra and ridgelines for the comfort of town. Before you book you should know
- This is a multi-day backpacking trip, so a good level of fitness is required. We recommend you start training 12 weeks before departure to build cardiovascular endurance and leg strength. Practice hiking with a backpack, beginning with a light load and gradually increasing weight each week until you can comfortably carry the full pack weight listed below.
- This trip involves hiking uphill and downhill with a 35 to 45 lb backpack for 5 to 7 hours per day. The most difficulty is on Day 1, with elevation gain of 2500 feet over 8 miles. The rest of the trip has moderate daily distances and elevation changes, and trends downhill. There are sections of hiking in significantly rugged terrain that can be wet, muddy, overgrown and possibly snow-covered.
- On this trip, you’ll be required to carry a backpack weighing approximately 35 to 45 lb. Trekking/hiking poles, a backpack and all camping gear is included. You may wish to bring your own sleeping bag.
- The climate surrounding the summit of Denali is notorious for hiding the mountain from view much of the time, so we can't guarantee clear views. It's all just part of the thrill. When the weather permits, this trip provides unobstructed views of the mountain - towering almost 17,000 ft above us - every day of the hike. Fingers crossed!
- On our backcountry hiking trips, bathroom facilities vary by location. Some trails and campsites have simple pit toilets, while others do not have built structures. In these cases, your trip leader will guide you through safe and responsible practices for going in the wilderness, following Leave No Trace principles.
1. This trip requires a minimum of two booked customers to guarantee the departure. Your booking agent will advise at time of booking if the departure has met minimum numbers. If your departure is cancelled due to minimum numbers not being met, a full refund will be provided.
2. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 11 am on Day 1 in Anchorage, AK. Please make your way to the Joining Point listed in the Essential Trip Information. Your group will then travel together to your hotel in Talkeetna.

The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline only and may change. On some occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our preferred accommodation. In these cases, we will use a similar standard of accommodation.
Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available.
You’ll camp in beautiful, well-located campgrounds or backcountry campsites, and spend the night in premier 1-person, 2-person or 4-person backcountry tents with self-inflating sleeping pads and synthetic-fill sleeping bags which are professionally laundered after every trip.
