A pilgrimage fueled by fresh seafood, fine wine and great company
Challenge yourself on one of Europe’s great pilgrimages on this 10-day adventure from Porto to Galicia. Tackling a section of Portugal’s Coastal Way – an offbeat trail with fewer walkers than other Camino routes – you’ll follow the rugged Atlantic coastline through the medieval seaside town of Baiona, the beautiful Bay of Vigo and the fishing town of Redondela. Then join the inland route through Pontevedra, Caldas de Reis and Padron before arriving at the historic Santiago de Compostela. With a local leader by your side, luggage transfers and a small group of travelers to share the journey with, all you have to do is put one foot in front of the other.

- Forget being weighed down with a heavy backpack – your main luggage will be transferred to each hotel, so all you need to carry is a day pack with your essentials.
- Visit a winery in Caldas de Rei to taste some of Galicia’s famous drops, including albarino – a crisp, citrusy white that pairs perfectly with Galicia’s world-renowned seafood.
Itinerary
Welcome to Portugal! A representative will be waiting for you at Lisbon Airport to take you to your hotel downtown. Your adventure begins with an important welcome meeting at 7 pm where you'll meet your local leader and get the lowdown on the week ahead. Stretching along the banks of the River Douro, Porto is one of Portugal's most romantic cities, known for its medieval riverside district, blue-tiled facades, merchants’ houses and, of course, port wine. After your meeting, you might like to head to a riverside restaurant and get to know your fellow travelers over dinner.

- Porto - Clerigos Tower - EUR10

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.
This morning you’ll take a private transfer to the small coastal town of Oia to begin your Camino journey. The trail you’re embarking on makes up the final section of the Portuguese Coastal Walk, and most of your time is actually spent in northwestern Spain around 12.5 mi from the Portuguese border. From Oia, you’ll walk a 12-mi trail to the medieval seaside town of Baiona. When you arrive, the rest of the afternoon is free to rest your legs – maybe at a restaurant with a glass of albarino wine and a plate of Galician-style octopus (Baiona is famous for its seafood from nutrient-rich estuarine inlets). If you're feeling active, maybe take a stroll along the port or visit the Monte Real fortress.

Your hiking distance today will be approximately 13 mi or 6.5 hrs, with 1475 ft of elevation gain.
Set off along the coastal trail from Baiona to Nigran on your way to Vigo. You'll pass breezy seascapes of the magnificent Bay of Vigo, with the acclaimed Islas Cies natural park on the horizon. These three rugged islands are part of the UNESCO-recognized Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park. If you happen to be walking on a hot day, why not cool off with a swim at Praia de Samil beach in Navia? You’ll arrive in Vigo in the late afternoon, ready for a leisure day tomorrow. Maybe pull up a chair in the historic quarter of Casco Vello and watch local life go by. Seafood lovers might also like to wander down Rua da Pescaderia, aka Oyster Street, to sample fresh oysters shucked on the spot.

As this is a shorter walking day, feel free to relax into the journey and take in your surroundings. Before arriving in Redondela for the evening, your leader will also guide you through a seafood tasting so you can sample more of Galicia’s world-renowned fish and shellfish. Sitting at the upper end of the Bay of Vigo, Redondela is where you'll finish your coastal walk and join the original Portuguese Camino trail tomorrow.

Along the way, you’ll stop by the fishing village of Arcade for a relaxed seafood lunch and a glass of locally produced wine (at your own expense). Continue for another three hours to Pontevedra. You'll arrive by the mid-afternoon, so you’ll still have plenty of time to explore the historic center – considered one of the best-preserved in Galicia – with its many Romanesque churches and granite-paved plazas.

With a mix of history, culture and gastronomy, it's the perfect place to take a breather before continuing your Camino journey tomorrow. Continue past the hills and vineyards of the scenic Lombo da Maceira area and see the statue of Saint James and the hamlet of Tivo with its fountain and public washing bath. You’ll arrive in Caldas de Reis, meaning ‘Hot Waters of the Kings’ in Galician, and spend the night here. The town is famous for its thermal waters believed to have healing properties for the body and spirit. Ask your leader about local spas or fountains where you can soak your feet.

After some victory high-fives, don’t forget to collect your Compostela certificate as a keepsake for the journey you’ve been on. Before you book you should know
- This is a walking trip. You need to be in good health to complete the walks. Please ensure you bring sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothes. To make the most of the trip, it's best if you have at least a moderate level of fitness.
- There are sections on the walk where it will not be possible to call in a taxi or any other transport.
- Your main luggage will be transported between each stop, but you will still carry a daypack with the essentials (water, snacks, a raincoat, etc.).
- The diversity of the seasons here makes for incredible scenery, but the weather in this region can be unpredictable. It’s best to wear layers at all times of the year in case conditions change during the day.
- While this route is called Portuguese Camino, most of the walking is on Spanish territory.
- We recommend packing light and smart for this trip as you'll be required to carry your own luggage at times, which can include going up and down multiple flights of stairs, and through cobblestone streets.
- As this trip spends very little time in Porto, it’s recommended that you arrive a day or two early to experience all the city has to offer.
1. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement applies to all nights of your trip and is subject to availability. There are a limited number of single supplements available per departure, due to the small properties we use along the Camino. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.
2. Your luggage will be transported between hotels. You are only allowed one bag/suitcase with a maximum weight of 40 lbs. No items should be strapped to your luggage, e.g. shoes or walking poles. Fees will apply to the transport of any additional luggage.
3. This trip requires a minimum of four booked customers to guarantee the departure. Your booking agent will advise at time of booking if the departure has met minimum numbers. If minimum numbers are not met, you will be advised no later than 60 days out from departure. We recommend arranging flights and related travel services once your departure is guaranteed. If your departure is cancelled due to minimum numbers not being met, a full refund will be provided.
4. Your trip is operated by Intrepid Travel.
The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline only and may change. On some occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our preferred accommodation. In these cases, we will use a similar standard of accommodation.
Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available.
We've sourced our accommodation very carefully and picked the best possible hotels in line with the Intrepid style of travel, but please note that service and accommodation in Europe may be different to the standards you are used to. Your accommodation may not always have private en suite facilities or air-conditioning. European hotels generally don't provide kettles or fridges and in particular destinations, rooms may be rather small.
OCCASIONAL ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION

TWIN SHARE
Accommodation on this trip is on a twin-share basis. We pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. Please note there may be times where facilities will be shared rather than ensuite (even when you book single room supplement).
CHECK-IN TIME
Throughout the trip we request that our hotels prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination.
